Unit 3 projects

This is my slab structure of unit 3,  had a lot of fun making this.  I was having trouble picking a mold and I finally decided on this one. For this project I noticed that when I was sanding the bottom of this it was really delicate and some sides of the plate were chipping off but I was able to make it even again. I thought that you wouldn't be able to see them once I put the glaze on, but I feel like the glaze really accentuated the imperfections. I used the jungle gem's glaze int he shade lotus blossom and I think that it is really pretty. Over all I think that it turned out really.

For this slab mold plate I first got a good size chunk of clay and then wedged it and rolled it in the  slab roller until  it was big enough to fit over my mold. I then layed my slab on to the bottom of the mold and cut the excess from around the plate. I then let it dry for a whole class and when I  came back I then sanded the bottom and the sides. Then once it was in the kiln I put the jungle gem glaze over top of it. And thats how I did my slab mold plate

This is my coil building and I found it kind of hard to get a hang of at first and rolling out all of the coils and stuff but it began to get easier as I kept going. I was going to try to get it as tall as I could which was like 6 inches but it was taking me to long to I decided not to. I was pretty happy with the result. I feel like I could've sanded it down a litte more than I did  and it would've looked better. Also I found it easier to smooth out the inside as I was going and not wait until the end to do it all.

For this coil build I started by making one decent size coil for the very bottom of  the coil build. I then smoothened the inside of the coil so that it is flat and smooth. then I made long strings of clay and wrapped it around the top of the first coil. And I built it up to the amount that I liked. Then  I also smoothed the inside of each string I put on. Then I made 8 individual coils and stood them up on the coil and filled in any of the empty spaces with balls of clay. Then I continued to make coil strings and made them into a wavy pattern. At the and of this the inside of this coil build was all smoothed out. Once I was done I put it on the shelf to get out into the kiln. After it was fired I painted it with that really pretty purple gloss glaze.

sgrafifto

For this sgrafifto I first made a cup out of a slab and smoothened it out. Then I put around 3 layers of this teal under glaze. And once that was dry I took a needle tool and made a rough draft of what I was going to carve into the cup. Once I liked it I then went over the lines I made with a needle tool and scratched out that design.

this piece really only took me one class period, I first started with a slab structure cup and then painted it with an under glaze and carved my tulips in it. I then put it in the kiln and put a coat of clear glaze on it, One thing that I found difficult was getting an even coat of under glaze on because it dried kind of fast which made it hard to remember where I started painting. And what was also difficult was carving the tulips in because I had dried the clay with the blow dryer and added a lot of coats of the glaze on, but over all I think that it turned out good.
